[Shoji HAMADA] (1894-1978)
A Japanese pottery.
1894 Born in Takatsu in Kanagawa (present Kawasaki).
1913 Entered Department of Ceramics industry of Tokyo Higher Technical School (present Tokyo iInstitute of Technology) and studied the basic science of ceramics under Hazan Itaya.
1916 After graduation from Tokyo Higher Technical School, he made the study of graze at the Kyoto ceramic pilot plan. He received support from Muneyoshi Yanagi, Tomimoto Kenkichi and Bernard Howell Leach.
1920 Moved to UK with Leach and built the pottery studio in St. Ives, Cornwall in concert with Leach.
1923 Had solo exhibition in London.
1934 Returned to Japan, and studied in Tsuboya pottery studio in Okinawa.
1930 Moved to Masuko, Tochigi where is the town of Masuko ware.
1955 Recognized as the the Living National Treasure.
1961 Assumed the director of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum after Muneyoshi Yanagi.
1964 Received the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon.
1968 Received the Order of Culture.
1977 Opened Mashiko Sankokan Museum in Mashiko and displayed folk crafts which he collected within and outside of the country.
1978 Died at the age of 83.
