[Suiko NAKAMURA] 1903-1985
A Kutani ware potter in Kaga city, Ishikawa prefecture.
Suiko was born Hisashi as the second son of a Kutani ware potter, the first generation Shutou Nakamura (1865-1928) in Kaga city. After his graduation from Ishikawa Prefecture Technical High School, he refined his skills under Hazan Itaya and Seizan Kawamura. In 1928, Seiko won his first prize at the Teiten exhibition. After the war, he received many of great prizes including the special prize of the Nitten Exhibition in 1947 and 1953, the Minister of Education Award at the Nitten Exhibition in 1970 and the Chunichi Cultural Award in 1977.
Suiko is known as a man of merit in the history of modern Kutani ware because he inspired the traditional Kutani with new methods such as Sometsuke and iron glaze that had not used for Kutani ware. He often used fishes and birds for his design.
Died in 1985 at the of 85.
[Kutani ware]
Kutani ware is a Japanese porcelain with overglaze painting, made in the southern cities of Kanazawa, Komatsu, Kaga, and Nomi in Ishikawa Prefecture. The first Kutani ware was produced in 1655 by order of Maeda Toshiharu, who governed this region in the mid-17th century.
This gorgeous porcelain is decorated with various styles of overglaze painting called ao-e, gosaide(5 colors paint), kinrande and so on.
