[Keisuke SERIZAWA] (1895-1984)
A Japanese dyeing artist. Person of Culture Merit Prize. Living National Treasure of Japan in the field of Katazoke stencil dyeing.
Keisuke was born in Shizuoka in 1895. After he graduated from Designs course of Tokyo Higher Technical School (present-day Tokyo Institute of Technology), He met Yanagi Sōetsu, a Japanese philosopher and founder of the mingei (folk craft) movement and Ryukyu Bingara (1 style of Japanese stencil dying in Okinawa). Keisuke produced fresh and original dyeing designs and became one of the representative artists of Japanese crafts in the 20th century. His talented works were highly evaluated within and outside the country.
Keisuke was designated as Living National Treasure of Japan in 1956, an honorary citizen of Shizuoka city in 1967. In 1981, the Municipal Serizawa Keisuke Art Museum was opened in the city of Shizuoka.
He died in 1984, at the age of 88.
