[Ryozo KAWAKITA](1934-)
A wood craft artisan.
Born in 1934, in Yamanakacho, Ishikawa. Ryogo learned and refined his skills of woodworking under his father Koichi who was a woodworking artist, and later Kodo Himi.
Ryozo mainly produces round-shape works carved from one wooden block. He rarely makes box shape works which can not be made by woodturning. Materials he uses are such as Japanese zelkova, mulberry wood, maple, persimmon wood and Japanese horse chestnut. In recent years, he has improved his skill of wiped lacquer artworks and created elegant wood crafts.
In 1994, he was recognized as Living National Treasure as the 5th wood craft artisans.
He was awarded The Order of the Purple Ribbon in 1999, and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2004.
