[Einosuke KAWAI] (1893-1962)
A potter in Taisho/ Showa perio. Born in Kyoto, 1893.
He was born as the 4th son of a potter, Zuiho Kawai, and succeeded family business with his older brother Unosuke.
In 1912, he completed the special course at Kyoto Ceramic Institute, and he established “Akatsuchisha”, a group of pottery artists with Yaichi Kusube and other artists.
In Showa period, he submitted his works to Teiten Exhibition and Bunten Exhibition, and his “Jiki Kaki Kabin( flowervace)” won the Special Award in Shinbunten Exhibition in 1942. “Toji Hakuyu Kabin” was bought by the Higashikuninomiya family in 1926, and “Uomon Suiban” and “Jiki Kaki Kabin( flowervace)” were bought by Imperial Household Agency in 1934. He was the judge of Nitten Exhibition after WW2.
In addition to traditional Kyoyaki technique, he was skillful at cinnabar blazed pottery and porcelain. He mainly created tea utensils and tablewares.
He died in 1962 at the age of 69.
