[Shunsai MAEHATA]
A Japanese lacquer ware artisan in Ishikawa prefecture. The present generation is Shunsai III.
Shunsai I was a Kijishi (woodturner). His son Shunsai II mastered Makie (gold paint) technique as well as woodturning. In addition, Shuns II learned the methods of tea utensils from Doukan Murata, a pupil of Soutetsu Nakamura, and the technique of Kaga-makie from Bisei Yasutani.
Shunei III, the present generation, refined his skills under his father Shuns II and Bisei Yasutani, then succeeded his father’s name in 1985.
