Suiran NAKAMURA (1942-)
Pottery who was born in Kyoto.
Specialized in “Kouchi-yaki”, and he mainly makes tea utensils. Based on traditional method, Suiran established modern Kouchi-yaki by improving the pigments and using new technique.
After he graduated from department of ceramic, Kyoto Hiyoshigaoka High School in Kyoto, he started training under his father, the first generation of Suiran in 1961.
He succeeded the name of “Suiran” in 1974, and stated to have exhibitions in various areas in Japan since 1978.
During 1980s, he won three magnificent prizes; a Prize of Governor of Kyoto at 25th Over-grazed Pottery Exhibition in 1982, the Grand Prix Prize at 6th Kyoto Ceramic Ware/ Kiyomizu were Exhibition and NHK Chairman’s Prize at 9th Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition in 1984.
He was recognized as a Kyoto ceramic ware/ Kiyomizu ware traditional craftsman in 1987. In 2003, he received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award and recognized as “Kyou no Meiko” Tradition Industry Outstanding Craftsman in Kyoto.
Also, he was recognized as “Gendai no Meiko” from the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2010.
