[Kanzan SHINKAI](1912-)
A Kyo ware potter. Kaizan was born Kunitaro in Kyoto, 1912.
His grandfather was the 3rd generation Yohei Seifu, a potter of the Edo period, and his father was a potter specialized in a potter's wheel. Kaizan entered Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts to study pattern and paintings then graduated it in 1930. At the same time of his graduation, he won his first prize at the 11th Teiten Exhibition, and he refined his skills under the 5th generation Rokube Shimizu.
In 1948, Kaizan won a prize at the 4th Nitten exhibition and his “Soshumon Kabin” got a Special Award in the 7th Nitten, 1951.
Kaizan’s special characteristic is use of various decollation techniques on his works such as inlaid, curved sculptural relief, painting with brush and stamping.

Kaolin (white clay) is painted over with a brush, leaving brush marks ("hake-me" in Japanese) on the surface of the item. A transparent glaze is then applied.
