[Seikou SATO] (1916-1996)
A Kamashi , a craftsman who makes Chagama (a cauldron at Japanese Tea ceremony). His pseudonym was "Josei".
He studied under Jitsuzo Negoro, the holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property, and his works received a high evaluation for its new sense of style with traditional methods. He was recognized as a master of Heraoshi (to make decoration on surface of a cauldron by engraving outer flame using special sticks or spatulas.) and his works were called as “Seikou gamma” or “Jyousei gamma”.
He was given the name “Okamashi” from Daitokuji temple in Kyoto.
In 1977 he was recognized as the Traditional Craftsman and received many prizes both in and outside of Japan. He won the Mokichi Saito Cultural prize in 1989 and received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays in 1992.
Died in 1996 at the age of 80.
