[Miyajima Ware]
One style of Japanese pottery made around Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, Hiroshima prefecture. One of the traditional crafts of Hiroshima prefecture.
It also called as “Osuna ware” or “Sinsha (sand of shrine) ware”.
In ancient times, people carried the sand of Itsukushima shrine as a charm for safety during their travel and they replaced it adding sand from other areas when they returned safely. In Edo period, potters made ceremonial equipments with this sands and it was the beginning of Miyajima ware.
Narikata ASANO, the load of Aki Hiroshima Domain let Osuna ware potters made tea utensils with clay and sands of Itsukushima shrine during Bunsei era and they got to know around Japan, still Miyajima ware declined temporally. Now there are 3 kilns of Miyajima ware near the shrine.
Most of Osuna ware are plain pottery that has "Miyajima ware" stamp on the bottom. They do not contain the sand of Itsukushima shrine today.
