[Touzan ITO]
A Kyo ware potter in Kyoto. The present generation is Tozan III.
Tozan I (1846-1920) was born in Kyoto in 1846, and established his studio along the Shirakawa river in 1867, after he refined his pottery skills under Douhachi Takahashi III, Denshichi Kanzan and other well-known potters in Kyoto. Tozan I was a potter who made great efforts for development of ceramic culture in Kyoto, such as establishment of the Institute of Ceramic and the training school of ceramic in Kyoto.
Tozan II(1871-1937) was the Tozan I’s adopted son-in-law.
Tozan III, the present generation, was born in 1900 as the eldest son of Tozan II. After his graduation from Kyoto Prefectural School of Art and Crafts (present-day Kyoto City Dohda Senior High School of Arts) , he refined his pottery skills under Tozan I and Tozan II, as well as Japanese paint under Ryoki Ooe. Tozan III’s work won a special commendation at the Teiten Exhibition in 1932. He succeeded the name of Tozan III in 1938.
