[Hand-painted Yuzen]
Yuzen is a technique to dye cloth with patterns that established in Genroku era in Kyoto. It has freely patterned design and bright colors.
Hand painted Yuzen is produced through many steps such as drawing rough sketch with blue ink made of Asiatic dayflower, covering sketch lines with paste, dyeing with colors, washing and so on.
Hata Tokio (1911-2008)
A Yuzen kimono designer/dyer who was designated as a Living National Treasure of Japan.
He loves the beauty of nature, especially the pattern of a mandarin duck; the symbol of being together in harmony. The feature of his design can be said to be the gorgeous and outstanding floral pattern.
He opened up a new original field between beauty of Kyo Yu'zen and Kaga Yu'zen. He accomplished the exhibition both within and outside Japan, such as he designed the furisode for Diana; British queen (1961-1997) at that time.
In October 2007, he left the stage working as a designer, passed away in February, 2008. (Age of 97)
