[Kyuhou KUZE]
A Kyo-yaki ceramics artist in Kyoto. Each generation has succeed the name “Kyuhou Kuze” from the first generation. They made brilliantly colored beautiful works such as tea bowls and water jugs. 3 of 5 masters are woman.
First Generation(1874-1947)
He was born as a son of Ninkei, a monk in the end of Edo-period. His real name was Hikogoro. He was close to Rengetsu Otagaki, a female tanka poet, and he stared pottery with the name “Ninyoku”. The 13th generation master of Urasenke, Inousai evaluated Kyuhou’s great skills of pottery and give him the name “Kyuhou”.
Died in 1947, at the age of 77.
Second Generation (1897-1974)
The oldest daughter of the first generation. Her real name was Ryuko.
Third Generation(unknown)
The nephew of the second generation Kyuhou (the oldest doughtier of the second’s sister). Real name was Tomoko. She was adopted to Kuze family and succeeded the third generation in 1974.
Fourth Generation (1925-)
The husband of the third generation Kyuhou. His real name was Shigeru. After he graduated from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, he studied pottery under the third generation, and succeeded the fourth generation Kyuhou in1987. He has kept the traditional methods of Kyoyaki from the first generation Kyuhou.
Fifth Generation
A female Kyoyaki ceramic artist. Succeeded the fifth generation of Kyuhou in 2006.
