[Shodai Ware]
One style of Japanese pottery produced in the north part of Kumamoto prefecture.
Shodai ware is made of rough pottery covered with iron glaze, and then decorate with what or yellow glaze.
It is said that the first Shodai ware was produced in 1632 by Gensichi Genkouji who moved to Kumamoto following his master Sansai Hosokawa, a Daimyo who was also known as a great tea master. The history of Shoudai ware was closed in Meiji period, however Jitarou Chokashige and Heijiro Joshoma revived it in Showa period.
Shodai ware was designated as Traditional Crafts of the country in 2003.
