[Sunkei Lacquer]
One technique of Urushi lacquer that paint glue on a surface and add yellow or red on it, then cover it with clear uric lacquer to allow the natural appearance of the wood.
Gardenia, arsenic sulphide, auramine are mainly used for yellow dye, and such as cochineal and Fuchsine are used for red dye.
Shunkei lacquer is said to have begun with the lacquer craftsman Shunkei of Izumi Sakai (now the city of Sakai in Osaka) and the method of Shunkei lacquer spread nationwide in the late of 14th century. Today Shunkei lacquer is produced in several areas in Japan, and Noshiro Sunkei (in Noshiro city, Akita prefecture), Hida Shunkei (in Takayama city,Gifu prefecture) and Awano Shunkei (in Ibaraki prefecture) are well known as the three major Shunkei lacquer.
Because Shunkei lacquerware is light and durable, they produce flat products such as a tray, bent products such as a sweets box and a nest of boxes, turned products, furnitures and buddhist alters.
