[Kichibei OKUMURA]
One of the Ten Craftsmen of the House of Sen.
Kichibei Okumura is a craftsman called “hyogu-shi” who pastes cloth or paper on the frame. He also produces paper items for Japanese Tea Ceremony such as kamikamashiki (paper kettle rest)and byobu(folding screen). The name has been handed down from the first generation Kichibei(1618-1700) to the present, the 12th generation Kichibei.
Originally, Kichibei was born to a samurai family in the north of Ohmi(present Shiga prefecture). However, he moved to Kyoto in 1646 and established a studio of mounting for paintings or calligraphy. Next generation, Kichibei II(1633-1719) became a purveyor to the Kishu Tokugawa family and Omote Senke.
Unfortunately, the kaden (family tradition) of the Okumura family was destroyed in the Great Fire of the Tenmei era in 1788 when Kichibei V(1755-1825) was the master, however Kichibei VI (1780-1908) recompiled it.
Kichibei IX(1840-1908) moved the house and studio to Ebisugawa on the Kanaza street in Kyoto.
